2019 Awards

Twenty four projects, completed between June 2017 and May 2019, were considered for the 2019 Dundee Civic Trust Awards. Given the high quality of the nominations, the Jury decided three projects merited awards and these were presented at a ceremony at Dundee University on 31 October.

V&A Dundee

The first Award went to V&A Dundee, Museum of Design, the flagship development in Dundee’s waterfront. The Jury felt this project demonstrated successful partnership working amongst the public, private and community sectors, over a 10-year period. It has resulted in the creation of a modern and welcoming place as well as a home for a new, and attractive, museum. Designed by Kengo Kuma and Associates, the client was Dundee City Council/V&A Dundee and the main contractor BAM Construction. The Delivery Architect was PiM.studio Architects, the Executive Architect James F Stephen Architects. Project Management was undertaken by Turner & Townsend.

The buildings have been restored and modernised and now provide office space for digital, financial, insurance and start-up companies. The architect was Nicoll Russell Studios, the client/developer Tayforth Properties Ltd and the main contractor Lyon Building Services.

The Jury recognized the significant design and engineering challenges of creating a building that spans the Edinburgh/Aberdeen railway line and felt that the solution found works well. The client was Dundee City Council, the architect Nicoll Russell Studios, the lead design Jacobs and the main contractor Balfour Beatty.

Commendations were also given to Hotel Indigo and Staybridge Serviced Apartments for the redevelopment of Lower Dens Works; the Riverside Flood Protection Scheme; Riverbank, a new private dwelling on Dundee Road, and the conversion of Craig-Gowan, a B-grade listed building, into flats.
